Atlus’ upcoming announcement at the Xbox Developer Direct has me buzzing with excitement, and I can’t help but speculate on what it could be. Having been a fan of their games since I first experienced the original Catherine, I’ve always appreciated Atlus’ blend of thought-provoking themes, like psycho-sexual symbolism, with engaging gameplay mechanics. With recent successes such as Metaphor: ReFantazio and Persona 3 Reload, I’m particularly eager to see what they have in store for us.
Given the franchise’s momentum in recent years, it would be a bit of a surprise not to see something related to Persona. Of course, Atlus could also decide to capitalize on the buzz around Metaphor: ReFantazio, a Game of the Year nominee. But then again, Atlus is known for surprises, so it could be something entirely unexpected — and I’m here for that.
Metaphor: ReFantazio DLC Could Be a Perfect Fit
The ending of Metaphor: ReFantazio leaves no doubt that the adventure isn’t over. Without diving into spoilers, the conclusion hints at further challenges for the heroes in the Kingdom of Euchronia, with the main group gearing up for more action. This narrative setup feels tailor-made for DLC, expanding the story post-main campaign. Atlus has previously released DLC that continued the story in other games, like Persona 3 Reload, which added a chapter featuring Aigis. Since Metaphor: ReFantazio has a similarly open-ended conclusion, it would make perfect sense for DLC to follow soon — perhaps as early as the upcoming Developer Direct.
Rumors of More Persona Remakes Following Persona 3 Reload
The success of Persona 3 Reload has raised expectations for more Persona remakes. With Persona 3 Reload becoming Atlus' fastest-selling game, rumors have begun circulating that other Persona titles could get similar remakes. The most likely candidates would be the older Revelations: Persona and Persona 2: Innocent Sin. However, these games would require extensive reworks, especially given how different they are from more modern Persona titles.
Alternatively, Persona 4 could be an excellent choice for a remake. Since it’s not as old as the first two games, Atlus might already have assets to work with, such as 3D models from Persona 4: Dancing All Night, and could use the original voice lines, avoiding the need for a full recast. Given that Persona 4 is beloved by fans, a remake could hit all the right notes, especially considering how much Persona 3 Reload resonated with the audience.
Could Persona 6 Be Revealed at Developer Direct?
It’s been nine years since Persona 5 was released, marking a significant gap in the series. Considering Atlus’ other major RPG franchise, Shin Megami Tensei, had a recent release in 2021, many fans are expecting an announcement for Persona 6 to be long overdue. However, there’s some hesitation because the Xbox Developer Direct might not seem like the ideal venue for a Persona 6 reveal, given the series' PlayStation roots. That said, the series has grown substantially in popularity on Xbox, with titles like Persona 5 Royal and Persona 3 Reload now available on the platform. It’s possible that Atlus might choose this event to broaden the appeal of the franchise even further.
Persona 5: The Phantom X Might Not Make the Cut
One title I’ve seen floated as a possibility is Persona 5: The Phantom X, a mobile gacha game set in the Persona 5 universe. Currently in open beta in China, it’s been speculated that Atlus could announce a global release at Xbox Developer Direct. However, I’m skeptical. Since Atlus is not the primary developer of the game (that distinction goes to Black Wings Game Studio), it seems more likely that Atlus will focus on a project they have a more direct hand in.
A New Knights in the Nightmare Game Could Be a Surprise
As a fan of Atlus' recent games, I'm open to whatever they choose to unveil. While I would be thrilled with Persona 6 or a Persona 4 remake, there’s always room for surprises. A new Knights in the Nightmare game, perhaps, or even a continuation of Metaphor: ReFantazio in some unexpected form — anything is possible, and I’m ready to be impressed. Whatever Atlus decides to show at the Xbox Developer Direct, I’ll be there for it, eagerly awaiting the next chapter in their already impressive catalog.
